Thailand’s Prayad Marksaeng earns British Open trip after Japan triumph

Thailand’s Prayad Marksaeng booked his place for the British Open after a one stroke triumph at the Mizuno Open on Sunday.
 
The in-form Thai will have a chance to redeem himself after the US Masters when he sealed his win in Japan thanks to a final birdie putt on the 18th hole for a superb six-under-par 65 at the Yomiuri Country Club.
 
Prayad had competed in the US Masters in April but he was forced to withdraw after nine holes in the second round due to a back injury.
 
The Hua Hin-based player will now relish his trip to Royal Birkdale with renewed strength eager to compete in his second Major of the year. It will also be the Thai’s second appereance at the British Open since his maiden outing in 1999.          Read the rest of this entry »

Singha Thailand PGA Championship golf set for Asian Tour debut

The Asian Tour will welcome a new event on its record 2008 Schedule following a landmark agreement to stage the Singha Thailand PGA Championship presented by The Sports Authority of Thailand next month.
 
The US$500,000 tournament will be played at the highly acclaimed Santiburi Country Club Chiang Rai in northern Thailand from June 26-29, 2008 where it will bring the curtains down on the first half of the season.
 
The latest addition will increase the Asian Tour’s burgeoning Schedule to 28 tournaments and an all-time high of US$38.2 million in prize money this season.
 
The Singha Thailand PGA Championship presented by The Sports Authority of Thailand, which will be sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Thailand PGA, will also mark the first time that the region’s governing body is working hand-in-hand with the Thailand PGA towards the development of the professional game.     Read the rest of this entry »

Hwang, Jun lead Maekyung Open Golf second round

Korea’s Jun Tae-hyun fired a four-under-par 68 and joined early pace setter Hwang In-choon at the top of the field at the halfway stage of the GS Caltex Maekyung Open Golf Championship on Friday.
 
Jun fired five birdies against a lone bogey for a six-under-par 138 total and finished alongside Hwang, who improved with an impressive 67 at the Nam Seoul Country Club.
 
The duo hold a one-stroke advantage over in-form teenager Noh Seung-yul who remained in the hunt after a solid 70 and was tied third with overnight leader Kang Ji-man, who slipped off the lead after an even-par performance.
 
Bae Sang-moon, last season’s winner of the SK Telecom Open, was also a stroke in the US$600,000 Asian Tour event behind the leaders after a 68 together with Park Sung-kook who carded a 70.     Read the rest of this entry »

Kim Kyung-tae to defend crown at GS Caltex Maekyung Open

kim-kyung-tae-gs-caltex-maekyung-open-koreaDefending champion Kim Kyung-tae of Korea will lead the local charge at next week’s GS Caltex Maekyung Open with the intention of keeping the trophy firmly on home soil for the fourth straight year.
 
Former British Open winner Mark Calcavecchia of United States was the last international winner in the 2004 edition but since then, the popular event has been dominated by home bred stars through the success of Choi Sang-ho (2005), Suk Jong-yul (2006) and Kim last year.
 
The talented Kim, winner of the Asian Games gold medal in 2006 before turning professional, continued the home success 12 months ago when he enjoyed an emphatic five-stroke triumph over Liang Wen-chong of China at the Nam Seoul Country Club.
 
Following his maiden Asian Tour victory, Kim subsequently produced a runner-up finish and another top-20 in 2007. This season, he has played in five tournaments but has missed the cut in four of those.     Read the rest of this entry »

Darren Clarke triumphs in BMW Asian Open Golf

Irish eyes were smiling once again for Darren Clarke when he claimed an emotional victory with a heroic final-hole birdie at the BMW Asian Open on Sunday.
 
The Ulsterman drained a 30-foot putt on the 18th hole to beat a gallant Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands by one shot and end his three-year title drought at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club.
 
It marked a welcome return to the winner’s circle for Clarke, who has endured a difficult past few years following the death of his wife Heather through cancer in 2006 and a dip in form.    
 
Clarke carded a final round of one-over-par 73 in tough conditions for an eight-under-par 280 aggregate to secure his 11th career victory on the European Tour and his first since the 2005 Taiheiyo Masters in Japan. Read the rest of this entry »

Darren Clarke grabs third round lead in BMW Asian Open Golf

The big Ulsterman fired five birdies against no bogeys at the Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club to edge ahead of overnight co-leader Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands, who returned a 69.
 
Little-known Englishman Robert Dinwiddie produced the day’s best of 66 to charge into third place, two off the lead while Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang was a further stroke back after a battling 69 in the US$2.3 million event sanctioned by the Asian Tour, European Tour and China Golf Association.
 
An eagle on the par four 17th earned Chinese teenage amateur Hu Mu the honour as the best placed local player in a share of fifth place following a 71, lying with amongst others, India’s Digvijay Singh, who fired an impressive 67.
 
Joint overnight leader Zhang Lian-wei endured a difficult 76 while Liang Wen-chong settled for a 73 as both players ended the day in a share of 15th place.

Holland’s Robert-Jan Dersken takes second round lead in BMW Asian Open

Shanghai, April 25: Holland’s Robert-Jan Dersken flew with wind to snatch the second round lead in the BMW Asian Open as he enjoyed a first-hand glimpse of China’s future golf champion.
 
Derksen made light work of tough conditions at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club, shooting a three-under-par 69 to lead by one from Ryder Cup star Darren Clarke, who also fired a matching score.
 
Overnight leader Peter O’Malley of Australia slipped two shots off the lead after a 74 but the story of the morning was delivered by 18-year-old Chinese amateur Hu Mu, who moved up the leaderboard with a 69 while playing alongside Derksen.     Read the rest of this entry »

Peter O’Malley takes first round lead at BWM Asian Open golf

Australian veteran Peter O’Malley snatched the first round lead at the BMW Asian Open on Thursday as in-form Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh headed the chasing pack.
 
A refreshed O’Malley, searching for a first victory in three years, sank six birdies against a lone bogey at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club for a five-under-par 67, one clear of Singh, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, Mikko Ilonen of Finland and England’s Oliver Wilson.
 
Scott Hend of Australia was a further stroke back after enduring a late double bogey for a 69 while golf legend Greg Norman, also from Australia, battled to a 71. Zhang Lian-wei carried China’s challenge with a fine 70 for a share of seventh place with amongst others Danny Chia of Malaysia and New Zealand’s Richard Lee.           Read the rest of this entry »
