Holland’s Robert-Jan Dersken takes second round lead in BMW Asian Open

Shanghai, April 25: Holland’s Robert-Jan Dersken flew with wind to snatch the second round lead in the BMW Asian Open as he enjoyed a first-hand glimpse of China’s future golf champion.
Derksen made light work of tough conditions at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club, shooting a three-under-par 69 to lead by one from Ryder Cup star Darren Clarke, who also fired a matching score.
Overnight leader Peter O’Malley of Australia slipped two shots off the lead after a 74 but the story of the morning was delivered by 18-year-old Chinese amateur Hu Mu, who moved up the leaderboard with a 69 while playing alongside Derksen.
Hu, who studies in Florida and trains under renowned swing guru David Leadbetter, is three back alongside compatriot and reigning Asian Tour’s number one Liang Wen-chong.
Birdies on the first two holes, at the 10th and 11th, got Derksen’s game into gear before going on to string another three birdies against two bogeys. “I was very pleased. I got off to a good start with birdies at the 10th and 11th. It was very difficult conditions but I hung in there, so pleased to be leading,” said the Dutchman, who is a two-time winner in Europe.
It has been three years since Derksen enjoyed the privilege of hoisting a winner’s trophy but he feels his game is good enough to drive off with the BMW Asian Open title this weekend.
“I was close last year and was a bit unlucky. Per-Ulrik Johansson played really well in Moscow and I couldn’t beat him. I have been playing well but not scoring well. I have had a few good starts and not had a good weekend. Putting has been good this week and that is a key. If I can continue, then I should have a chance on Sunday.”
