Irish eyes were smiling once again for Darren Clarke when he claimed an emotional victory with a heroic final-hole birdie at the BMW Asian Open on Sunday.
 
The Ulsterman drained a 30-foot putt on the 18th hole to beat a gallant Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands by one shot and end his three-year title drought at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club.

The big Ulsterman fired five birdies against no bogeys at the Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club to edge ahead of overnight co-leader Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands, who returned a 69.
 
Little-known Englishman Robert Dinwiddie produced the day’s best of 66 to charge into third place, two off the lead while Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang was a further stroke back after a battling 69 in the US$2.3 million event sanctioned by the Asian Tour, European Tour and China Golf Association.

Australian veteran Peter O’Malley snatched the first round lead at the BMW Asian Open on Thursday as in-form Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh headed the chasing pack.
 
A refreshed O’Malley, searching for a first victory in three years, sank six birdies against a lone bogey at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club for a five-under-par 67, one clear of Singh, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, Mikko Ilonen of Finland and England’s Oliver Wilson.
