Darren Clarke grabs third round lead in BMW Asian Open Golf

The big Ulsterman fired five birdies against no bogeys at the Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club to edge ahead of overnight co-leader Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands, who returned a 69.
 
Little-known Englishman Robert Dinwiddie produced the day’s best of 66 to charge into third place, two off the lead while Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang was a further stroke back after a battling 69 in the US$2.3 million event sanctioned by the Asian Tour, European Tour and China Golf Association.
 
An eagle on the par four 17th earned Chinese teenage amateur Hu Mu the honour as the best placed local player in a share of fifth place following a 71, lying with amongst others, India’s Digvijay Singh, who fired an impressive 67.
 
Joint overnight leader Zhang Lian-wei endured a difficult 76 while Liang Wen-chong settled for a 73 as both players ended the day in a share of 15th place.

Holland’s Robert-Jan Dersken takes second round lead in BMW Asian Open

Shanghai, April 25: Holland’s Robert-Jan Dersken flew with wind to snatch the second round lead in the BMW Asian Open as he enjoyed a first-hand glimpse of China’s future golf champion.
 
Derksen made light work of tough conditions at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club, shooting a three-under-par 69 to lead by one from Ryder Cup star Darren Clarke, who also fired a matching score.
 
Overnight leader Peter O’Malley of Australia slipped two shots off the lead after a 74 but the story of the morning was delivered by 18-year-old Chinese amateur Hu Mu, who moved up the leaderboard with a 69 while playing alongside Derksen.     Read the rest of this entry »

Peter O’Malley takes first round lead at BWM Asian Open golf

Australian veteran Peter O’Malley snatched the first round lead at the BMW Asian Open on Thursday as in-form Indian star Jeev Milkha Singh headed the chasing pack.
 
A refreshed O’Malley, searching for a first victory in three years, sank six birdies against a lone bogey at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club for a five-under-par 67, one clear of Singh, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, Mikko Ilonen of Finland and England’s Oliver Wilson.
 
Scott Hend of Australia was a further stroke back after enduring a late double bogey for a 69 while golf legend Greg Norman, also from Australia, battled to a 71. Zhang Lian-wei carried China’s challenge with a fine 70 for a share of seventh place with amongst others Danny Chia of Malaysia and New Zealand’s Richard Lee.           Read the rest of this entry »

Will Retief Goosen bag this year’s BMW Asian Open?

 In-form Retief Goosen will be one of the top draws at the upcoming US$2.3 million BMW Asian Open from April 24-27 at Tomson Pudong Golf Club, as the South African star comes to Shanghai on a high note after an equal runner-up finish at the recent WGC-CA Championship in Florida.
 
The two-time US Open winner, who is the current world number 26, is one of the game’s elite players and he has always played some of his best golf in China, a country where he won twice previously in 2005 and 2006.
 
Last season, he led the Champions’ event in Shanghai through three rounds only to finish equal third, while he was equal 15th at Tomson Pudong during his BMW Asian Open debut.          Read the rest of this entry »

Ireland’s Damien McGrane Triumphs in Volvo China Open

 Ireland’s Damien McGrane battled through torrential rains at the Beijing CBD International Golf Course to claim his much-awaited maiden title at the Volvo China Open on Sunday.
 
McGrane closed with a one-over-par 73 for a 10-under-par 278 total to take a nine-stroke victory over Oliver Wilson and Simon Griffiths from England as well as French rookie, Michael Lorenzo-vera who are all tied for second on 287.
 
Current Asian Tour Order of Merit leader, Mark Brown of New Zealand is a further shot back on 288 with defending champion, Markus Brier of Austria and Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell.

Michael Lorenzo-vera holds on to lead at Volvo China Open Golf Second Round

 Michael Lorenzo-vera of France is enjoying one of the best starts to his rookie year when he produced another battling performance to move a single shot ahead of his closest rivals at the Volvo China Open on Friday.
 
Lorenzo-vera carded a three-under-par 69 to take his two-day total to eight-under-par 136, ahead of England’s Richard Finch and Ireland’s Damien McGrane who both finished on matching 137s.
 
England’s Oliver Wilson, who posted the day’s best score of 66 is a further shot back in fourth place while defending champion, Markus Brier of Austria is tied for fifth with Jason Knutzon of the United States and England’s Zane Scotland and Simon Griffiths. Read the rest of this entry »

French Michael Lorenzo-vera takes early first round lead at Volvo China Open

Unheralded Michael Lorenzo-vera of France set the early pace at the Volvo China Open when he fired a five-under-par 67 to take the first round lead on Thursday.
 
Asian Tour regulars, Simon Griffiths of England and Jason Knutzon of the United States are a further shot back in tied-second, after they both posted matching 68s with Joost Luiten of the Netherlands, Ireland’s Damien McGrane, England’s Zane Scotland and Li Chao of China.
 
Despite playing in his rookie year on the European Tour, Lorenzo-vera is already showing signs of maturity on tour and coping well with the demands of the game.
 
The 23-year-old Frenchman got off to a shaky start with an opening bogey but got himself back into the game with a birdie on the second followed by another two more in the sixth and ninth holes before making the turn in 33.     Read the rest of this entry »

Singh makes cut in Masters Tournament

India’s Jeev Milkha Singh scrambled to a two-over-par 74 at the Masters Tournament to safely make the halfway cut on Friday but it was the end of the road for Liang Wen-chong and an injured Prayad Marksaeng.
 
Singh, the Asian Tour’s number one in 2006, battled tough playing conditions at Augusta National Golf Club, turning in 35 before dropping three bogeys, including two at the notorious Amen Corner.
 
Asia’s number one Liang carded a 78 to bow out in what is his Masters debut while Thailand’s Prayad retired after nine holes with a back injury. Korean star K.J. Choi fired a 75 to make the weekend rounds right on the 148 mark.   Read the rest of this entry »
